Of Nice Angels (as opposed to the real ones)
In Scripture, the visitation of an angel is always alarming; it has to begin by saying "Fear not." The Victorian angel looks as if it were going to say, "There, there."

I always wondered were the sweet notion of angels came from. As a child my parents brought me up on Bible stories and kept me away from TV - and it came as rather a shock later on when I discovered that most people thought angels were soft and sweet and kind and gentle. The first thing that popped into my head when I thought angel was the one that guarded the Garden of Eden, and he didn't seem that sweet to me.
It is also interesting to note that in Scripture, the seraphim are actually winged serpents - dragon-like creatures who breathed fire. Hardly the victorian angel of the Rennaisance.
